ENGLISH CLASS: STATIVE VERBS These are verbs that cannot be written in the 'ing' form as verbs.

LET'S POLISH OUR ENGLISH.
Today, on this forum, we shall look at

*ENGLISH CLASS: STATIVE VERBS* 

These are verbs that cannot be written in the 'ing' form as verbs. 

Stative verbs are also called non-conclusive verbs. They do not take the 'ing' form. In other words, A stative verb is the one that cannot be used in a sentence in the continuous or progressive tense form, 

e.g. I now love my wife more(correct) The verb ' love' : cannot be used in the continuous sentence structure. It is wrong to say or write: I am now loving my wife more(wrong). Note: the verb 'love' is a stative verb.

Other examples are verbs of perception such as the following:

(A):verbs of the senses:

see,smell,hear, taste, etc.

(B):verbs of the mind:
 
think,forget, remember, believe, etc.

(C):Other verbs like: certain,
 
matter, seem,cost,owe, doubt, trust,understand, hope, like, depend,possess, resemble, wish,recognise etc.

Efforts are made here to correct errors relating to this topic and also to give analysis on each:

(1):You are owing me(incorrect), You owe me ( correct) 

Note: Owe is a stative verb- it does not take the continuous tense maker 'ing'

(2): I am wishing you Merry Christmas (wrong) , I wish you Merry Christmas (correct)

(3):This is the first time of seeing you (Incorrect), The is the first time, I have seen you (Correct). 

Note:" see" is a stative verb, it does not take the continuous tense maker 'ing'.

(4): I am hearing you (incorrect), I can hear you (correct) 

Note: *'Hear', is a stative verb cannot take the 'ing' form in the verb place except when it is used as a gerundive noun, e.g. hearing the sonorous music is good.

5). I am feeling cold (Incorrect)
I feel cold (correct)

6) I am understanding you (incorrect)
I understand you (correct)

Educate someone to day--- (the usage of stative verb)
