n Nigeria, very few people understand the art and act of managing the scarce resources surrounding us, be it in the area of finance, time, career, home, self or situation we might find ourselves daily. We are often in a hurry to take decisions, that often back fire and result into damage control, panic, wasted resources and exhaustion. All this can be avoided if and only if we can take the pill called POSDCORB, daily. Yes, a daily dose of  POSDCORB, will help us to be better managers of time, activities, money and so on.   Most individuals might see it as no big deal but following the outlined steps might be the turning point, making us better managers of resources efficiently and effectively.   Planning: This is outlining in concise terms, all that you need to do which can be daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly, and methods for carrying out such, which must be aligned to the overall purpose. Overall purpose is the end result of the planning. Therefore, conscious effort must be geared towards accounting for daily activities, that turns into months before finally becoming a year. Planning can be short, medium or long term. Adequate planning allows you to monitor progress. Organizing: This can be said to be the establishment of a workable and flexible structure , which is arranged to fit into what has been planned, which makes coordination easy. Organizing also is the arrangement of all you intend to do, in order of priority and importance. We have our duties and obligations to our employers and also to our future. These two must be well balanced, so as to avoid conflict of interest. Office tasks should be well arranged and ticked once done and those not finished can be carried over. At this point, it is advised that you have a diary to outline your “to do list”. Most people often use their brain as a store but your diary or note pad can act as the main or backup brain, depending on how you view it. Directing: Once you have planned and organized your day, the next is to direct the flow  and transmission of such into reality. You call it “piloting” or “guiding towards” the set agenda. This is where you issue specific instructions to your driver, cook, friends, associates, laptop, mobile phones and so on, which aids quick result and reduces time wasting and getting more done. Ability to take decisions becomes easier as you have planned and arranged who is doing what and at what time. Staffing: For you to get more done, staffing plays a major roll, that is,  the whole personnel or tools that you will need to carry out your assigned tasks. Personnel (subordinates) and gadgets (internet, mobile phones etc) have to be blended to ensure that no lapse or gap is left unattended to. Co-Ordinating: This is the all important duty of interrelating the various parts of the work, that is, harnessing all personnel and tools towards the plan as outlined. This is critical as all activities should be monitored closely to ensure that there is no deviation from the overall goal. Reporting: This implies communicating progress to those that should know, that is, team members, superiors, subordinates via records, research, and inspection. With this, you are conscious of where you started from, where you are and remaining grounds to be covered. Budgeting: Resource must be allotted to the plan in terms on money, time, personnel it will take to actualize the plan. There must also be adequate control of these resources to minimize or eradicate wastage. with all that goes with budgeting in the form of planning, accounting and control. It might sound not easy but once you can start your day with POSDCORB, you can be rest assured of doing more with less energy and achieving more. I hope you find this useful. Abayomi Kuton
