Bring Back Our Primary Six

*Part of Extract from*:

RESOLUTION AND COMMUNIQUE REACHED AT THE INAUGURAL MEETING ON BRING BACK PRIMARY 6 MOVEMENT HELD AT 3BEES EVENT CENTRE ,KETU ,LAGOS - NIGERIA ON 14TH NOVEMBER 2018

The un-abated mass rush of Nigerian children to secondary school from primary 4 and 5 which is perceived to be responsible for *depressions* , *carelessness*, immaturity at handling sensitive issues in work places and other *psychosocial imbalances* in our society made many stakeholders in the field of education gathered together recently to discuss the causal- effect of this menace and to find a lasting solution to it...
At this meeting , attended by many well meaning Nigerians of over 500 from all walks of life - *Parents , Caregivers , Pastors , Imams, Teachers , School Owners , PTA executive , Lecturers , Researchers , Representatives of Vice Chancellors; Provosts of colleges of Education ; Rectors of Polytechnics , NGOs, Educational Associations like AGED, NAPPS, NIMPS , ANPEIN etc ,Students from primary and Colleges etc*...
it was observed that the trend of students jumping into Secondary school did not just start , it is been happening for decades but recently becomes so worrisome when parents these days are the one making the move to have their children leave for secondary schools from *primary 4* .
It was equally revealed that, there is no policy provision for this abnormal trend since 1977 when the first policy on Education was published up till 2013, the last (6th edition) where the age duration for each of the classes has always been provided ...

At the meeting too ,it was observed that immaturity of all sorts and attitudinal problems of youth workers in all places are becoming unbearable which was traced to non - completion of primary cycle of education and the leaving for higher institutions of learning from SS2 when they must have sat for SSCE OR NECO from this class..
After these observations, the following resolutions and recommendations were made :
√ placement to JS classes should be scrutinized
√ Double promotion should be discouraged
√Adequate requirements for establishing schools should be publicised and express of interest should be investigated to know if the perspective owners are genuinely professionals
√Assiciations should synergize with one another to pursue the legislation or policy against movement to secondary school from primary 4 or 5
√ presentation of first leaving certificate should be a prerequisite for registration into J S
√ Provisions in the National Policy should be respected by the practitioners
√ All government agencies in charge of education at the Basic education level should enforce the policy provisions
√ Sanction all erring parties without reservations
√ The advocacy should be spread to other States of the nation until compliance is ensured .
✓ Non acceptance of declaration of age but Birth Certificate for admission into primary1.

✓ A child going to primary 1 should be 6 years by ending of September which is the beginning of New School Year.

*Watch out for Part 2 of the resolution*
